Angry residents of Ntawo village, Central Division in Mukono Municipality over the weekend stormed the area police post after it snatched a suspected thief from their clutches just as they were about to lynch him to death.
These angry residents pinned John Kiwanuka 37, a butcher in the same area for animal theft saying that 3 days before they received information about the theft of their colleague, Sarah Namagembe’s pregnant pig which prompted them to begin investigating him privately since this wasn’t the first time he was doing this.
According to these residents, they then received information about how Kiwanuka stole the pig and took it to his brother, Andrew Sande for safe keeping and on storming his house they found the left over pieces still in the house which raised their eye brows.
“We then forced Sande to confess which he did but insisted that he had no idea the pig was stolen and that it was his brother, Kiwanuka who brought the pig telling him to cut it so that they could sell it,” said an angry resident.
Sande then led them to where Kiwanuka was conducting his business from and pounced on him beating him with sticks as well as kicking him nearly to death only to be rescued by the police which whisked him away.
The LC1 Chairperson, Ssalongo Moses Male expressed disappointment in the son of his good friend as well as resident in the same area who he thought was a very hard working man yet he was using this as a way of committing crime by stealing from residents.
According to Mukono DPC, Robert Seguya it wasn’t right for the residents to practice mob justice on a suspect before he could be proven guilty by the courts of law.
Seguya added that Kiwanuka was then taken to Mukono Health Centre IV for treatment since he had been beaten severely and had sustained serious injuries where he would then be taken to court to answer to his crimes after recovering.
