Needy children in Ntenjeru sub-county have been given new hope for a bright future through a shs. 180m/= seven-classroom block constructed for them by a German humanitarian association called Vision For Children based in Hamburg city.
The new facility for St. John Bosco Orphanage at Namwabula village in Bunakijja parish, commissioned on Saturday by Mukono South member of parliament Johnson Senyonga Muyanja, is a graduation from the age long jigger-infested wooden structures.
The assistance was solicited for by M/S Katosi Inter Community Development Alliance (KIDA) charged with caring for orphans an children from very needy families.
Commissioning the new block, Senyonga was sad to note that many otherwise intelligent children from poor backgrounds drop out of school prematurely for lack of people to support them financially.
He added that the plight of such children is compounded by the unconducive atmosphere they study in, like the old structures at the orphanage, which he said do not serve as an incentive to boost the learners’ morale.
Senyonga appealed to residents to own and love the school, and to reject any acts likely to breed insecurity. “Kenya was a fast developing country but you can see what is happening there due to political unrest; you all have a duty to maintain the infrastructure through maintenance of peace”, he advised.
Turning to the donors, the MP pledged government’s commitment to render more assistance to the school as a way of appreciating their gesture.
The chairperson for the German donor association Hila Limar said they managed to raise money through fundraising drives and donations from friendly families at home.
She said Uganda is the first African country to benefit from their assistance, and pledged to keep close ties with the school to ensure that there is no relapse to the old unhygienic conditions.
KIDA chairman Tonny Kabuye said the facility goes a long way in uplifting the pupils from the wooden structure which he said were a haven for jiggers and prone to breeding other diseases caused by the frost-like winds blowing from Lake Victoria in the vicinity.
