Uganda national Roads Authority is demolished 79 buildings in Mukono municipality to pave way for widening the junction of Kampala – Jinja and Mukono – Kayunga highway.
According to William Matovu in charge of compensation in UNRA says that the most affected section is going to be that of Mukono taxi part.
This has left Mukono leadership and residents divided were by one section opposes the demolition of taxi and relocate while others support the idea.
The area Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze Bakireke says that instead of relocating this taxi park to another location council should just set up new small taxi parks in various parts of municipality.
Nambooze says that during their campaigns they promised together with mayor Kagimu to never relocate businesses communities in favor of development as its in Kampala.
She explains that this has forced her to fall apart with mayor Kagimu who is advocating for relocation of Mukono taxi park to a new place.
Mayor Fred George Kagimu asked mMukono residents to accept change which is coming up in Mukono municipality.
He explains that he is not in office to sale Mukono municipality land arguing that he is doing this for better development of municipality.
The traders and owners of lockups in Mukono taxi park asked Kagimu always to involve them in his plans saying they are also stake holders in Mukono municipality.
The traders vowed to oppose any development which will take place in Mukono municipality if Kagimu doesn’t give them chance to put in their inputs.
However lockups owners in Mukono taxi park have promised to vacate the area as long as UNRA has compensated them.
